Smoking Increases Diabetes Risk

About 16 million people in the U.S. suffer from some form of diabetes, with Type 2 diabetes being the most common, a preventable condition often associated with obesity. While risk factors for Type 2 diabetes usually include family history, obesity and sedentary lifestyles, new research has shown that cigarette smoking may also increase risk for the disease.

In a study, researchers assessed the blood sugar, medical histories, and smoking, drinking and exercise habits of 1,300 men, ages 35 to 59, between 1994 and 1999. After factoring in traditional risk factors such as family history and obesity, researchers found that participants who smoked 31 or more cigarettes per day were four times more likely to develop diabetes than nonsmokers. In addition, those who smoked 21 to 30 cigarettes per day increased their risk three times, and those who smoked 20 or less cigarettes per day increased their risk by 88 percent.

Researchers are unsure of how smoking increases diabetes risk, but they believe that smoking may trigger the release of hormones that counteract insulin and cause an increase in blood sugar.

Also, previous studies have shown that smoking may cause tissues to reject the effects of insulin. The study’s researchers note that the link between diabetes risk and smoking may be contributed to other lifestyle factors other than smoking itself. Smokers in the study tended to have family histories of diabetes, were older and exercised less than nonsmokers.
