Well the sun has grown hotter and it is time to go out and play. With summer comes ample opportunities for exercise and fun but fattening snacks are everywhere it seems. Whether it’s grilled hotdogs, greasy fair fries, salty margaritas, or a host of other high calorie favorites tempting us, we must remember that moderation is the key. Summer beach parties are also known to have plenty of alcohol. Here are a few tips for surviving this season in the sun without getting burnt!

Overeating at picnics and beach parties is a common mistake that many of us make during the summer months. Since fruit is in season and there are usually cool salads, there are usually a wide variety of choices, though. How about a few tips for eating less during the summer?

1. Stock up on all the fruits that you love. Not only are they low in fat, but these delights are also nutritious.

2. If you attend a covered dish buffet, why not bring a fruit salad or watermelon? A vegetable treat like baked green beans or a tossed salad goes well with almost anything too. Some other good choices are pasta salad, or a chicken taco dip or salad as well.

3. Drinking plenty of water is good for your skin and also your waistline. Not only do you feel fuller, but you will also keep yourself hydrated on those humid days too.

Drink plenty of water, but don’t make the mistake of indulging in alcohol in the same manner. As few as two drinks can effect your brain’s ability to function, so be cautious when drinking, especially in the hot sun. Here are a few common sense tips to keep you on an even keel this summer and all year long.

1. Eat before attending your summer party.

2. If you are drinking alcohol, eat some snacks as you imbibe.

3. A meal high in protein just before the party is your best bet.

4. Pace yourself! Spread the drinks out so that there is at least thirty minutes between drinks.

5. Do not plan on driving if you drink more than a few drinks.

6. It is a good idea to have a contingency plan.

a. This may include a designated driver.

b. You may also want to have hotel reservations at a nearby inn.

c. Make sure that there is taxi service available.

d. You may even want to “crash” at friends if you are too intoxicated.

Remember to stay cool and safe this summer season.
